Hello, my name is Gill Smith and I am a retired doctor. In November 2015, I moved to Edinburgh to be closer to family and enjoy the city’s many delights. I live in Corstorphine with my partner, dog and 2 cats. I have 3 grown up sons, one of whom lives in Peru. I enjoy gardening, reading and spending time with friends and family.

I am a Quaker, and before I retired, I worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist at The Retreat in York.

Horizons hypnotherapy is a clinical hypnotherapy service I have set up at 25 Nicolson Square, with the support of Edinburgh Dream Factory. Throughout my time working as a doctor, I have enjoyed using hypnosis to help people with health problems, as it is a creative and effective method of therapy. Now I have retired, I can continue using hypnosis outside of the formal medical framework.

Physical and psychological health problems are closely entwined, and hypnosis is an excellent way of tackling both.

Hypnosis can be used to enhance various treatments for almost any health condition. However, the most usual areas of concern include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), phobias, pain, migraine, depression and anxiety. Problem habits such as smoking and misuse of alcohol and drugs may also be helped.

When someone comes to see me for the first time, we discuss the problem areas as well as the life history, personal and leisure interests, and then together plan the content and process of the therapy. One of the things I most like about helping people using hypnosis is that not only does it help the initial health problem, but the person feels better all round, especially with respect to self esteem and self-confidence, which are often very low if someone has had long-standing health problems which have not responded well to treatment before.

My fees are open to negotiation – my main motivation for creating Horizons hypnotherapy is to be able to use hypnosis to help people with physical and psychological health difficulties.
